Do you ever get really excited to make a recipe, start pulling out the ingredients, only to realize you don’t have buttermilk on hand? I have. Too many times to count. I got sick of not having buttermilk on hand, and sick of buying it and then not using it up in time because I don’t use it that much.
So, I just stopped buying buttermilk altogether. It’s been years and I haven’t looked back. I use this super simple buttermilk substitute recipe instead. It has never let me down. I use it in baked goods and have even used it to make buttermilk ranch chicken.
I’m telling you, it works. You might even have the ingredients on hand and if you don’t, you can buy my secret ingredient once and it will last you a while.
Buttermilk Substitute Ingredients
That’s it. Just two ingredients. Here is how it works. You mix up a bit of white vinegar into a glass of milk. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then use it in place of buttermilk in any recipe.
What about powdered buttermilk?
I have also used powdered buttermilk and have found that it works great in baked goods. This is the brand that I have used. The powdered stuff is great because it’s shelf stable until you actually open the package. Then it stays fresh in the refrigerator for quite some time. The only reason why I prefer my homemade buttermilk substitute is cost.
Whichever way you choose, you can get away with not having to buy buttermilk.
