So, I just stopped buying buttermilk altogether. It’s been years and I haven’t looked back. I use this super simple buttermilk substitute recipe instead. It has never let me down. I use it in my banana chocolate chip cake and have even used it to make buttermilk ranch chicken.

That’s it. Just two ingredients. Here is how it works. You mix up a bit of white vinegar into a glass of milk. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then use it in place of buttermilk in any recipe.

What about powdered buttermilk?

I have also used powdered buttermilk and have found that it works great in baked goods. This is the brand that I have used. The powdered stuff is great because it’s shelf stable until you actually open the package. Then it stays fresh in the refrigerator for quite some time. The only reason why I prefer my homemade buttermilk substitute is cost.

Whichever way you choose, you can get away with not having to buy buttermilk.
